8 Things You Need to Do When Moving Into a New House

Marcus Henning • July 1, 2021

You don't want any of these things to be forgotten before you move into a new home.
This checklist will help you navigate the process.

It cannot be easy to move into a new house. It is already a time of change, and you are leaving behind cherished memories. It's the fun part about moving day: deciding where to put your stuff.
Before you start moving furniture and unloading the moving truck, it is important to make sure that these items are checked off your list. You will regret it later if you don't do these things before you unpack.
These are the eight things you should do before you move into a new home.

1.Double-check the location.

After you have received the keys, go to your new home and inspect all rooms. Once you become the homeowner, make sure that everything was still in place. It is important to make sure that everything you had hoped for remains in the house.

2. Change the locks.

It is impossible to count the number of sets of keys that may be scattered around your home. Hire a locksmith to ensure your security and get a new set of keys.

3. Clean high before you clean lower

Dust doesn't have to be confined to floors or countertops. Ceiling fans, overhead lighting fixtures, and shelving are all equally susceptible to grime, but they don't get cleaned nearly as often and tend to leave dust and dirt in the area below them once they do get cleaned. Cleaning these high-up features will undoubtedly cause the places below them to get a bit dirty too. Start at the top of each room, and work your way down.
Tip: Ceiling fan blades are known for dumping dust. To reduce collateral damage, Slip an old pillowcase over each edge of the pillowcase's inner layer to wipe the entire fixture clean. The majority of the dust that escapes from the pillowcase will collect in the top layer, which can be cleaned or tossed out.

4.Change the seat in the toilet.

Although it may seem silly, the toilets are the most neglected area in a house. Instead of spending time cleaning them, take them out and clean underneath. Then, replace the seat with a new one. Sitting on brand-new chairs that your family has christened will give you peace of mind.

5.Controlling pests

You and your family should be the only ones moving into your new home. Hire an exterminator to inspect your home for any unwanted guests, seal holes for pests, and spray the house to repel future intruders.

6.Replace your air filters.

You can't know when they last changed, and extra dust could cause damage to your carpets and home. It's better to start with new filters. You can mark the date they were installed on the filter as well as your calendar to keep track of when you changed them.

7.Finish the Floors

Wood, tile, or linoleum floor cleaning is as simple as using a vacuum attachment. Start at the top and end at the bottom. Next, clean the edges and corners with a vacuum attachment. Finally, sweep up any remaining debris. If your vacuum is not specifically designed for this purpose, don't vacuum the entire surface. Make sure you mop the whole surface with a safe product. A steam cleaner is the best choice for a thorough carpet cleaning. You can rent one at your local hardware store or hire one from a professional if you don't have one. Although vacuuming may make your carpet look better, it will not remove allergens and improve air quality. What good is vacuuming if it doesn't do the job properly?

8.Safety first

Ensure your home is safe while you are doing a deep clean. Vacuum out the dryer vent while you are in the laundry area. While you're cleaning out ceiling fans and walls, make sure to change the batteries in your smoke detectors. Find a place to keep a fire extinguisher when you clear out your kitchen cabinets.
A quick tip: Many people will repaint their homes when they move into a new place. You might want to put off this task. You can pick up some samples and try a few spots. It is best to live in the house for a while before committing to a new color scheme. You will learn how to use the rooms and the lighting throughout the day by living in a new home. These factors will impact your choice of color. It is not a good idea to paint again after deciding you don't like the color you selected at a particular time of the day.
