Top 7 Ways to Save Money on Packing Supplies

Marcus Henning • August 9, 2021

It can be hard to move, especially if you are trying to do it on a tight budget. There are many costs to consider, including the cost of moving movers and a rental truck and the costs of renting or closing a new house.
Then there's the cost of packing materials, which can quickly add up. You have some flexibility in how much you spend on supplies, which is a big advantage over securing your next location and transporting your belongings. You can save a lot of money while still protecting your belongings. These are some ways to save money on packing materials and have more control over your moving budget.

1. Start Early
You will need to start sooner to get cheap or free supplies. You will also be able to dispose of unnecessary items faster. Last-minute purchases can cause a lot of expenses in the moving process.
2. Get Rid of All Your Stuff
You can save money by getting rid of things you don't need.   Whether you are moving long distances or locally, the more stuff you have, the more expensive the move will be. If you are looking to save money on your move, make sure to get rid of or sell as much as possible.   Consider getting rid of your old, heavy furniture if you are moving long distances. You'll likely find that moving heavy furniture to a new location will cost you less than buying cheap furniture.
3. Reuse Bubble Wrap and Paper
You can also recycle paper and bubble wrap to save money on packing materials.   If you are sure you will be putting your belongings in storage at some point in the future, this is a great way to save any bubble wrap that you find when you have parcels delivered. You can also ask your friends and local shops to give you bubble wrap instead of buying it new.
4. Use Linens, Sheets, & Towels To Pack Items
Instead of spending a lot of money on packing paper, you can use your sheets, towels, and linens to wrap and protect certain items (not plates, bowls, or dishes).   For your kitchen breakable items, you will need to pack paper. However, using the paper you have already on miscellaneous items can save you money on packaging paper and boxes.

Moving companies usually raise their rates between May and August. During May and August is when moving companies are most busy.   Moving outside these dates can help you save money. Movers tend to be less busy, and their rates will drop.

Local movers usually charge per hour. If you look at reviews, you can gauge the speed of a moving slow-moving should be aware that slow-moving companies can take longer to complete your move and may cost you more. Look for movers who have positive reviews and can move items efficiently and quickly. Read tips online on how to find a suitable moving company for you .
7.Compare Moving Quotes
All movers may not quote the same job. Professional movers will do a more efficient job of moving your belongings. Always check online reviews of moving companies before you compare quotes. Comparing moving quotes from companies will give you an idea of what to expect on your moving day.   A mover may offer a lower quote, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the actual cost will be higher. It is important to compare their hourly rates with the time it takes them to move.
